Identity Theft, National Security Issues Threaten P2P

From Ars Technica:
The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform has asked the FTC to look more closely at P2P apps—but this time, the worries have nothing to do with copyright.

The committee has a bee in its collective bonnet about the issue of data security, and believes that P2P users across the country are inadvertently leaking private information and financial records into the tubes. Such information could be used for identity theft (and also has national security implications in some cases), and the Oversight Committee wants the FTC to do something.

Pali Research Downgrades Warner Music Group

Cayocosta

Largely based upon declining sales data, the report also briefly cites the recent Madonna and Radiohead episodes as additional justification for the downgrade to "Sell" while positing that the industry must change - but doing so will take time and the requisite restructuring will be costly.

Stating "we believe an increasing majority of worldwide consumers simply view music as free" the report suggests a new business model must emerge for music consumption; most likely manifested via DRM-free music at no cost to consumers, supported by advertising and promoted through social-networking.

DRM-free downloads are encouraged as potentially increasing digital revenue near-term.

Future Giants

Cayocosta

I writing here to make clear that in my defense of artists and record companies against piracy, I’m not shilling for the RIAA or corporate interests; I’m just a musician and music-fan that tends to get pretty upset when I read so much careless rhetoric espousing piracy; or speculation regarding the future of the music-industry, written by individuals that obviously don’t know what they’re talking about.

Personally, if the music industry were to disappear tomorrow, my world would not be affected in the least; for I haven’t bought a record released after 1980 in more than 10 years. That’s not to say that I don’t buy records - I own over six-hundred - it’s just been a very long time since I’ve felt compelled to purchase new music.

I grew up listening to a wide variety of music (that appeared to be in a constant state of evolution); great music, from truly great artists. (The period from the mid 60’s to mid 70’s was a time of amazing musical diversity and creativity.) Unfortunately, in my opinion (and I’ve thought quite a bit about this) that all came to an end sometime in the late 70’s. (Although I’m not a fan of Elvis; it always seems to me to have coincided with his death.)

As such, my hope is that we’ll eventually experience a renaissance of sorts within popular-music - a new period of musical creativity, diversity and quality that rivals or possibly even exceeds that which came before. However, in my opinion this cannot take place without record companies in the classic sense; because, if for no other reason, music’s future visionaries in the style of Berry Gordy, John Hammond, George Martin, Ahmet Etrtegun, Jerry Wexler, Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss – “behind the scenes” giants responsible for discovering and developing wonderful talent that otherwise may have never surfaced – will have no place.

Therefore, if I’m shilling for anything, it’s the return of great music.

Ozzy Osbourne Blames Poor Album Sales On Illegal Downloading

Sounds like unlike Trent Reznor, Ozzy Osbourne did not have an OiNK account. Osbourne is complaining that he is “suffering terribly” from the effects of illegal downloading. The Ozz man tells Australia’s Herald Sun that sales of his newest release Black Rain have lagged because of Web piracy, forcing him to perform ninety concerts this year — a career high for the fifty-eight-year-old singer. “If they don’t find something to stop [illegal downloading], people won’t be able to make records. There won’t be any new bands. How are they going to survive?” he asked.

WCBS to Return to Oldies Format

New York is getting its oldies station back.

WCBS-FM will return to the oldies format sometime next week, according to an industry insider with knowledge of the decision. A spokeswoman for the station’s operator, CBS Radio, declined to comment.

In a bid for younger listeners, WCBS abandoned oldies music two years ago, flipping to the iPod-like Jack format and firing heritage on-air staffers like Bruce Morrow, a.k.a. Cousin Brucie, and Harry Harrison. The station, 101.1, had been playing oldies for 33 years.

The Jack format uses no deejays and mixes older songs with contemporary tunes in a random seeming sequence.

The abrupt switch to Jack on June 3, 2005 caused an uproar among WCBS-FM’s loyal listeners, including Mayor Mike Bloomberg, who swore he would never listen to the station again. Most of its loyal listeners, many aged over 55, followed suit.

Jack’s ratings plummeted to a 1.5 share of listeners from the 3.9 share the oldies format had. In the most recent Arbitron survey, 101.1 had a 2.2 share.

Sirius Satellite Radio used the controversy to trumpet its own oldies programming, hiring Mr. Morrow as a host.

The move to Jack also hurt ad billings. Revenue for 101.1 plunged 31% in 2006, to $16.1 million, according to BIA Financial Network.
