Junior Walker: What Does It Take

So much of the old stuff is framed in such optimistic harmony...

"optimistic harmony"... what a great way to describe that sound.

I first noticed it with the Supremes (and Motown in general) as most of the lyrics are generally pretty depressing, but just about always packaged in really uplifting orchestrations. Never bothered to check if it's a minor/major change that generally turns it. I probably should. "Tears Of A Clown" is a great example. Great idea to place a sad lyric over an up-tempo major arrangement.

Listening to the song really makes me miss that era of American music. I sincerely believe that some of these old R&B tracks are national treasures, and some of these artists; goodwill ambassadors. "My Cherie Amore" is my pick for the melody that best represents the spirit of America - it would be wonderful to re-establish that optimistic spirit in music once again.
